African drumming has been shown to be enjoyable and therapeutic for special needs children, especially those with Prader-Willi Syndrome. Having the drum between your legs while it is played sends vibrations through the drummers entire body. This provides valuable sensory stimulation. The rhythmic drumming is also a tremendous amount of fun for our kids with PWS.
The drums were played for the first time by our boys from Simpkins. Although most had no previous drumming experience, everyone soon got the hang of it and the group had a lot of fun. We expect that the drums will be getting much more use in the future. There was even talk about putting together a demonstration at our annual End of the Year Celebration.

I too agree that African drumming is a good medicine and it will be used more in future.

ReplyDeleteWe don't have a true music therapy program. We do have music programs -- a teacher who has classes in dance, musical theater, chorus, bells and beginner work with instruments. We have guest musicians perform as well. We would love to hear your ideas! Feel free to contact me: cgallant@lathamcenters.org
