This fall is an exciting time for Latham Center’s Maintenance Department as we begin our new initiative to “Go Green”. In recent months, we have been shifting our focus toward more eco-friendly methods and products to do our part in preserving Cape Cod’s extraordinary environment. Included in these steps are a switch from chemical household cleaners to “green” alternatives and the use of energy saving light fixtures wherever possible. In addition, Latham Centers has partnered with both NLR (Next Level for Recycling) and the Green Team of MassDEP (Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection) in an effort to reduce waste and raise recycling awareness on campus.NLR, a Connecticut based company, provides the capability for Latham to significantly reduce our potential for environmental mercury contamination associated with the improper disposal and mismanagement of used fluorescent and mercury-containing lamps. Our new recycling center is located right on campus and is sure to be an advantageous addition to our program.
Similarly, joining the Green Team of Massachusetts Schools has provided Latham Centers with a better opportunity to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle while getting our students involved! Massachusetts’ 2006 waste reduction rate was 60% and the state has set a goal of 70% waste reduction by 2010 – a goal we hope to help our state achieve. Using the recycling bins, composting containers and “Idle-Free” parking zones provided by the program, both our students and staff will be putting in a little effort to make a big difference!
