Jessica Gremila Accepts Teaching Position at Latham

I am pleased to report that Jessica Gremila has accepted a position at Latham Centers as the teacher in our youngest classroom. Jess has been a substitute here for over a year, spending her time floating amongst classrooms and residences. Jess was born and raised on Cape Cod and attended school at Bridgewater State University. Jess is currently pursuing higher education in Special Education and is looking forward to starting her teacher career here at Latham Centers.

When asked what Jess enjoys most about Latham she stated that, “watching the kids grow educationally and seeing how much they overcome is extremely rewarding." Jess also stated that she “chose to begin my teaching career here because it was a great setting to challenge myself and work with the kids I have fostered relationships with over the past year.”

Jess is extremely enthusiastic about her social skills and English Language Arts curriculum. Upon walking into her classroom this morning, the students were engaged in researching information about their new book series. As a Cape Cod native, Jess cites the summer as being the best part about living here, and she is excited to be working with the students during Latham’s Summertide Program this year. Jess will begin leading this Spring’s Sensory Art Club and she hopes to “engage the students in multi-sensory art projects that explore all the senses."

Congratulations Jess! We are looking forward to watching you flourish and grow in your new classroom!

Latham is the best. I like to do stuff on outings. My staff is nice. My class is fun. I have animals and I give them food. We have a fish and tadpole frogs. I also clean the tank and give medicine. Brewster Falls classroom is fun and the best. I play on the i-Pad. Candy Crush is my favorite and my class has a sensory room and two computers. I like my class, the students, and teachers, too. Students help me when I have a little issue. I have a job, I put up the flag. I love it!

I love school. I think it's fun. I also like to read. My favorite book is Charlotte's Web. I also love Math. I think it's awesome. My teacher is awesome too. They are always supporting me. I am thankful that I have awesome staff that cares for me. I also thank Amie for helping me and to help me achieve. When I get out of Latham I am going to college to be a teacher just like Amie. I also have good staff and friends to be there for me in hard times. I want to thank everybody for all their help and kindness.

Latham School means a lot to me. The staff and peers and Circle of Courage are helpful in so many ways using Generosity, Mastery, Belonging, and Independence. The environment is a good and safe place. The peers and staff use Generosity, Mastery, Belonging, and Independence because it makes Latham better and safe and with no bullying. Latham School is safe and caring. At Latham School we should write to a friend and a staff to say something kind and nice. Brittni, Kristi, and Anthony are the best #1 staff ever.

What My School Means to Me

What My School Means to Me

What school means to me is having a good education, good grades, friends, safety, being organized, respectful, responsible, friendly, polite, good manners, and just to have fun. I like Latham because most of the people here are more sincere and more understanding towards your feelings as opposed to a public school. Have you ever felt like fitting in a group to be accepted or trying to impress your peers in order for them to like you? I have because at my other school, everybody seemed to be more focused on themselves because they wanted other people to like them. What I think is people should be who they are for people to like them and if just one person doesn't like you there are so many other people that you can be friends with. It is important to make friends and keep them instead of trying to make yourself look popular. If people went too far with it, nobody would want to be friends because they don't like show-offs. So make the right choice and what you think is the best decision.

Principal’s Corner!

We are winding down here at the school house with all our Alternative Testing Portfolios! Teachers have been doing a fabulous job over the last few months creating invigorating curriculum to mirror the standards contained in the Alternative Testing. While the administration and teachers could consider ourselves well-rounded in the Massachusetts Alt. Assessment, this year we had the opportunity to better educate ourselves in other states’ alternative assessments! Our teachers attended training in Long Island, New York in October of 2014 to prepare for the NY Alt. Two teachers and I became experts on the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program by reviewing materials sent to use by the school district.
Aidan is currently working on finishing his New York Alt. In science, his classroom has been busy learning about the states of matter and cause/effect relationships in weather. In math he is mastering how to solve for a variable at the end of a linear equation!

Brennan is currently working on finishing his Virginia Alternate Assessment Program! In reading, Brennan is focusing on demonstrating comprehension of both fictional and nonfictional texts. In math, Brennan is demonstrating his knowledge of expressions and operations, as well as equations and inequalities.

Teachers and students have been working very hard and will be submitting their student’s work in the next few months for review. Our students are proud of the work they have completed and look forward to showing off their portfolio!

Great job to our students Aidan and Brennan, and kudos to our amazing teachers, Jeff, Suzanne, Heather, and Alanna!
