Brewster Falls Class Trip to Herring Run

The Brewster Falls classroom visited the Brewster Herring run to complement a unit focused on “Simple Machines”. There is a waterwheel that powered a gristmill for Brewster back when flour was ground in that way. The class finished their field trip by visiting the local playground at Drummer Boy Park.

Latham Adults Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

Individuals from the Gilbough Program are invited to join the Creativity Group. The group meets 1-2 times a month. The individuals are invited to bring craft projects they are already working on or we will provide them an activity.

On March 16,  the Creativity group met at the Great Hill Residence. The theme was Saint Patrick's Day and the activity was decorating foam shamrocks with glitter, markers, and stickers. Staff person, Rae Dewees,  discussed the history of St. Patrick's day as well as some interesting  and fun facts about the Irish holiday.

The individuals enjoyed pizza, soda, salad, and jello with festive green cool whip.

After dinner, Staff and the individuals listened to traditional Irish folk music.  A few of  the individuals gave a demonstration of  traditional Irish dancing including the "Irish step-dance" and " The Irish Jig." Later in the evening,  one of the individuals set up her MP3 player and speakers and played disco .

Creativity group will meet next on April 20.

Pleasant Bay Class Celebrates Black History Month

Recently, the Pleasant Bay class, led by Special Education teacher Lindsay Strimaitis completed a great learning project for Black History month. The group started off by discussing what we already knew about Black History Month and why we celebrate it.  We read a packet and discovered who created Black History Month, when it began, what the purpose is and learned some information about some influential African American people.

Next we began reading "Wanted Dead or Alive", The True Story of Harriet Tubman by Ann McGovern.  Lindsay read each chapter aloud and the class discussed and contributed important ideas to write on the chapter summary.  The chapters were divided up and each student wrote about 2 or 3 summaries. After writing about each chapter students took turns finding pictures to go along with what they wrote.

Then we made a bulletin board. For the border--Throughout the month of February we traced our hands and colored them in different skin tones.  We wrote words on them that show respect, equality and other values related to Black History month. We added our chapter summaries of the story about Harriet Tubman and the pictures we found. The unit’s ending activity was a quiz on Harriet Tubman’s life. The students were really proud of their work on this project!

Soon to be Latham Graduate Particiaptes in PWS Presentation

Jessie Siles, soon to be our most recent graduate from Latham, sports enthusiast, responsible jobs program participant and general ‘good guy’, put another feather in his cap by participating in his class’ presentation on Prader-Willi-Syndrome. He did research on the computer for information on PWS, helped prepare a Power Point slide show and read along with two of his classmates in the program presented to several other classes at Latham. He and his peers did a fabulous job and enjoyed a hearty round of applause! Congratulations Jessie!

Everyone Loves Dancing

Many of our kids look forward to the quarterly dances we attend. The Best Buddies Holiday Dance took place before Christmas and many students left campus to attend. There was plenty of loud music, lots of room for dancing and many new friends to meet. This year it was held at the Harwich High School and is open to all special needs young people in the local area.

Holiday Performances Around Town

The Holiday season is always busy for students at Latham Centers. This year they have collected toys for disadvantaged children, made money at a Holiday craft fair for a memorial fund for a staff member who passed away this year, and enjoyed the holiday spirit out in the community. On December 5th a group of 6 students, members of the bell choir, accompanied by Latham’s music teacher and other staff, rang out Holiday tunes at Brewster’s annual Christmas Stroll, sponsored by Brewster’s Lemon Tree shops. When they had finished their performance, they were rewarded by a cookie and cider plus a hayride with Santa. All present agreed that the bell ringers “played beautifully!” Another group of students, Latham’s ballet class, attended a local performance of the Nutcracker. They all agreed that the performance was well done and that lots of cute children added to the charm. Students are now looking forward to Latham’s annual Holiday party where they will be treated by songs by Latham’s chorus and a visit from Santa himself.

Halloween Parade Today

Today at Latham there are lots of people you normally wouldn’t see walking around campus. There is Batman, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Michael Jackson, Barbie and a human size puppy just to name a few. Today is Latham’s annual Halloween Parade.

Students and staff come to school dressed in their favorite costume. Classroom discussions take on a whole new feel when everyone is dressed up. After school today all the students will make the Halloween trek around campus trick or treating on a specified route. Later they will judge the best staff costume when all staff line up. This is a great day at Latham.

Kids Love Field Hockey

In Physical Education this week, many of the classes have been learning field hockey skills. Presently, they are learning how to handle the stick and basic ball handling skills. Physical education is a regular part of the kid’s school day and is geared towards their individual needs.

End of Summer Vacation

Students at Latham are kept very busy. This week they are enjoying a “vacation” between the ending of the Summertide Program and the beginning of the new school year on Wednesday September 8th.

Since vacation weeks are a change in our regular schedule, it is important to have interesting outings and thoughtful activities to keep the kids engaged. This week the students will have the opportunity to go to the Southwick Zoo, attend the “High School Musical” at the Orleans Playhouse, climb Scargo Tower and enjoy Scargo Beach and finish the week with the annual End of Summer barbeque at Skaket Beach in Orleans. (This barbeque is traditionally planned for Thursday, but we had to bump it up to Friday because of the threat of Hurricane Earl.)

Students have had a wonderful summer and are going to be well rested and focused for the upcoming school year.

Hello from the Science Lab!

Over the summer,  Latham Science consisted of a series of eight field trips, one each week of Summertide.  Preparation for these trips started in May with our classroom studies of ecosystems, habitats and food chains.  Each of our summer field trips explored a different kind of habitat on Cape Cod.  We are SO lucky to be located in the middle of this beautiful place!

At each location we had a series of experiments and observations to perform and data to record.  We examined soils (structure, porosity, pH, temperature);  waters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, etc); plants (What grows here? What’s in bloom?  Who pollinates the blooms? Who eats the fruit?) and;  animals (Who do we see? Hear? See tracks of? Feel biting us?).  We recorded this information in science logs.

Here is the schedule of trips we went on:

Week 1:  Wellfleet Bay Audubon Sanctuary.  With a guide we explored the differences in salt and fresh water ponds.

Week 2: Upper Mill Pond in the Punkhorn Parklands of Brewster.  We hiked and performed our studies on the beautiful woods and fresh water environment.

Week 3:  Pah Wah Point in Orleans Conservation Land.  A short hike leads to a small beach on Pleasant Bay and a great salt water environment.  Many vacated horseshoe crab shells!

Week 4: White Cedar Swamp, National Seashore in Wellfleet.  A beautiful hike through the woods leads to a boardwalk through the swamp which is truly a unique environment.

Week 5:  Mud Flat Mania at Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Brewster.  With a guide we explored the mud flats at low tide and discovered much life in tidal pools.

Week 6: Art’s Dune Tours, Provincetown.  We rode in Suburbans out to the back beach (on the Atlantic) and then up into the sand dunes.  The sand temperature was 110o F on the surface and 80o F four inches below!

Week 7: Ocean Quest Discovery Cruise, Woods Hole.  We drove to Falmouth, took a trolley to Woods Hole, spent an hour and half on a boat learning about the biological, physical and chemical characteristics of the marine environment.  A big adventure!!

Week 8:  A beautiful private garden in Wellfleet.  We picnic, visit domestic animals (chickens, goats, donkey) and test the soil of a human altered environment . A relaxing end to a busy summer.

WE HAD A GREAT SUMMER LEARNING ABOUT BEAUTIFUL CAPE COD!!!  Please enjoy the pictures which are only a tiny few from the more than 1000 we took!

A “Dedicated” Day!

What do the Boston Red Sox and Latham Centers have in common?  Well, if you are part of Red Sox Nation (as we here at Latham certainly are) you know that the 2004 and 2007 World Champions had some of the greatest team players ever to play the game of baseball.

On August 6, 2010, Latham Centers honored its own MVP’s, former members of the Board of Directors, Dr Russell Boles, Jr., MD and Harry MacDonald. At the dedication ceremony Board President Keith Bradley eloquently spoke of the impact these two men had on the extraordinary growth in care and services that we are able to provide. In dedicating the clinical building as the Dr Russell Boles, Jr., MD Clinical Building and our transitional cottage as the Harry MacDonald Cottage, we honor their years of service to Latham Centers as champions for children and adults.

We have all benefited from their experience, generosity, knowledge, kindness, empathy and wit.  Through the tireless efforts of Dr Boles and Mr. MacDonald, Latham Centers has grown into a program of excellence for children and adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome and as a program for children and adults with developmental challenges.  It has been an honor to work along side these remarkable gentlemen and we wish them well as they pursue their next adventure.
