Healthy Choices & Nutritious Cooking Course

The Nursing Department will be working on a Healthy Choices/Nutritious Cooking Course scheduled to begin by January, 2013. The course will be a collaborative effort between Anne Seyffert, RN and Gerry Pouliot, Assistant Principal. Anne will work with the students while Gerry will focus on creating the lesson plans. Some of the highlights will include:
  • Increasing the nutritional value of favorite foods by decreasing unhealthy fats and sugars
  • Using seasonal ingredients
  • Cooking hygiene
  • Aesthetic presentation of meals
  • Using herbs and spices for flavor
The course will include trips to farms, farmers markets and grocery stores to help students appreciate the importance of fresh produce in their diet. Students will also learn to read labels as a part of their understanding of the importance to limit the intake of sodium, carbohydrates and fats found in processed foods. Anne will be working with the students on meal preparations and presentation. Students who have been asked about participation in such a class were very excited and are looking forward to the experience.

Once established, we plan to move the course to other residences with the ultimate goal to increase healthy habits that students will take with them on their journey to adulthood.

Seeing Old Friends

Today Latham Centers had one of our “Flu Clinics”. To be honest, I don’t generally look forward to this event even though these nurses are the best at giving the vaccines.  To my astonishment and delight, I walked into the waiting room and saw a group of lively, young people who I have had the pleasure of supporting as students when they were in our school program.  We laughed, hugged and caught up abit on where they are living and what they are doing. I was so pleased to see how healthy they looked. It is hard to believe that I met some of them in the 1980’s and 1990’s! Hearing them giggle and laugh made my day. In fact, it made my year!  Flu shot here I come!

Nursing News

As of August 30th, 2010 Latham will have RN coverage on campus Monday to Friday 7:00 A.M. until 9:00PM Monday through Friday. These include all the hours the students are awake. Saturday and Sunday we have nursing coverage from 11am to 4pm but hope to expand that further in the near future.   The nurses dispense medications; monitor and arrange for medical visits; provide assessment and treatment of the children’s medical needs; and do health teaching.

Nursing News

Latham School continues to look for ways to improve the care we provide. The nursing department now has the capability to do on site hearing screening as we purchased an Audiometer. This will allow us to identify Hearing limitations early on and provide early intervention.

Incredibly, our first screening identified a student who came to us identified as hearing impaired.

Our testing showed she has perfect hearing but has a problem processing information. She will be receiving the appropriate therapy going forward.”

Tips From The Nursing Department

If you or someone you take care of takes medicines here are some helpful hints to make it easier and safer.
  • Separate medications into categories as much as possible.
  • Keep all regularly scheduled medications together. Additionally separate them by the time they are taken. Keep all other medications that you take on as needed basis separately.
  • Plastic weekly medication containers that you load once a week are helpful –when buying get separate colors to color code for different times of day. Load the containers when it is quiet and you can concentrate on one thing.

Taking your medications as prescribed is the one of the major problems doctors report. These tips should help you to be safe and get the maximum benefit from your medications.

Nursing News

The week of May 6 -12, 2009 was National Nurses Appreciation Week. To honor the incredible commitment of the nurses in the Adult & Children’s Programs of Latham Centers, Inc, the Director of Nursing hosted “High Tea” at a local restaurant. A great time was had by all as we ate scones, tea sandwiches and sugary confections. Creating and sustaining a program of excellence continues to be a focus for the nurses of Latham Centers.
