Only Two Weeks Left! Make Your Donation Today!

It's Jolly Jaunt time again, and Latham needs your help. Latham’s Special Olympics program survives, and thrives, because of voluntary donations like yours. In the Children's program, over half the student population participate in Special Olympics every season throughout the year. It is the backbone of the work we do here.
The Jolly Jaunt is the main fundraiser of the season and involves a 10k run through the streets of Hyannis. This year’s Jaunt takes place on December 6th. Because of the money raised last year, all of our students were able to participate as much as they wanted without charge. We were able to buy new uniforms, equipment and awards for post-season parties. In this time of fiscal restraint, we were actually able to expand our Special Olympics program to include Flag Football.
Your donation is so important and 100% goes directly to the kids. Please CLICK HERE and donate to one of the individual runners or make a general team donation today. Thanks!

Latham Runs the Field At Gillette Stadium

The Latham Hawks were part of the inaugural flag football season for Special Olympics. On Sunday November 1st, the final game was held at Gillette Stadium. The boys and the girls have been working hard all season to learn the rules and skills of this new sport and were determined to do their best on Sunday. Head coach Wayne McDonald has done a fabulous job with the team and has successfully laid the foundation for this new team to survive into the future. Way to go Hawks!

Tips From The Nursing Department

If you or someone you take care of takes medicines here are some helpful hints to make it easier and safer.
  • Separate medications into categories as much as possible.
  • Keep all regularly scheduled medications together. Additionally separate them by the time they are taken. Keep all other medications that you take on as needed basis separately.
  • Plastic weekly medication containers that you load once a week are helpful –when buying get separate colors to color code for different times of day. Load the containers when it is quiet and you can concentrate on one thing.

Taking your medications as prescribed is the one of the major problems doctors report. These tips should help you to be safe and get the maximum benefit from your medications.

Changes in the Nurse’s Schedules

The nursing department sees students all day with a broad spectrum of medical problems. We are proud to say that expanded nursing hours are allowing us to take students with more complex medical problems and to have the availability to give as needed (PRN) psychotropic medications for those students who benefit from them. We've also redecorated the infirmary to make it more cozy and homelike for all the students.

The Leaves May Be Changing...But Latham's Going Green!

This fall is an exciting time for Latham Center’s Maintenance Department as we begin our new initiative to “Go Green”. In recent months, we have been shifting our focus toward more eco-friendly methods and products to do our part in preserving Cape Cod’s extraordinary environment. Included in these steps are a switch from chemical household cleaners to “green” alternatives and the use of energy saving light fixtures wherever possible. In addition, Latham Centers has partnered with both NLR (Next Level for Recycling) and the Green Team of MassDEP (Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection) in an effort to reduce waste and raise recycling awareness on campus.
NLR, a Connecticut based company, provides the capability for Latham to significantly reduce our potential for environmental mercury contamination associated with the improper disposal and mismanagement of used fluorescent and mercury-containing lamps. Our new recycling center is located right on campus and is sure to be an advantageous addition to our program.

Similarly, joining the Green Team of Massachusetts Schools has provided Latham Centers with a better opportunity to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle while getting our students involved! Massachusetts’ 2006 waste reduction rate was 60% and the state has set a goal of 70% waste reduction by 2010 – a goal we hope to help our state achieve. Using the recycling bins, composting containers and “Idle-Free” parking zones provided by the program, both our students and staff will be putting in a little effort to make a big difference!
